Introduction to Inconel Products

The Inconel is a series of austenitic nickel-chromium based superalloys with outstanding performance in severe environments. They were originally designed by Special Metals Corporation and are made to resist immense heat, pressure and corrosion conditions in which standard stainless steels and other metals cannot endure.

The first aspect of the Inconel products is the capacity to maintain high mechanical strength and toughness at high temperatures (up to 2000°F / 1093°C). Inconel also does not disintegrate like many other materials when subjected to heat, instead it forms a stable, passivating oxide layer that prevents the surface from further attack. This is what makes it the material of choice in aerospace, chemical processing and nuclear industries.

Stellar Alloys is a company that produces and supplies Inconel products of high quality and globally. Our total inventory includes pipes, tubes, plates, sheets, bars, and fittings in all the major grades such as 600, 601, 625, 718, 800, 800H/HT and 825. We produce our products with rigorous ASTM, ASME and API standards in order to achieve reliability in high-pressure applications.

Key Applications by Industry

  • Aerospace & Aviation : Jet engine exhaust systems, turbine blades, afterburners, and engine thrust reversers utilize Inconel 718 and 625 for their high creep-rupture strength at extreme temperatures.
  • Chemical Processing : Reactors, heat exchangers, evaporators, and transfer piping handling alkalies, fatty acids, and chlorides. Inconel 600 and Incoloy 825 are standard materials.
  • Oil & Gas : Downhole tubing, wellhead components, and subsea pipelines in sour gas (H2S) environments. Inconel 625 and 718 provide necessary corrosion resistance and strength.
  • Power Generation : Nuclear reactor components, steam generator tubing, ash handling systems, and superheater tubing in waste-to-energy boilers utilize Incoloy 800H/HT.
  • Marine Engineering : Propeller shafts, submarine auxiliary propulsion motors, and exhaust systems exposed to seawater. Inconel 625 offers virtual immunity to chloride pitting.
  • Thermal Processing : Furnace muffles, retorts, radiant tubes, and heat treating baskets. Inconel 600 and 601 resist oxidation and carburization at red-heat temperatures.

Heat Treatment Processes

Proper heat treatment is critical to achieving the desired properties in Inconel alloys.

  • Solution Annealing: Typically performed between 925°C and 980°C (1700°F – 1800°F) followed by rapid cooling to dissolve carbides and maximize corrosion resistance.
  • Precipitation Hardening (Age Hardening): Used for grades like Inconel 718. Involves heating to ~720°C, holding, furnace cooling to ~620°C, and holding again to form strengthening precipitates.
  • Stress Relieving: Performed after cold working or welding to reduce residual stresses and prevent distortion or stress corrosion cracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Inconel is primarily composed of Nickel (usually 50%+) and Chromium (15-25%), with additions of Iron, Molybdenum, Niobium, and Cobalt depending on the specific grade. This composition provides its superalloy properties.

Inconel 600 is a solid-solution alloy used for general corrosion and heat resistance. Inconel 625 contains added molybdenum and niobium, providing significantly higher strength and better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in seawater.

Yes, but it requires specific procedures. Inconel can be prone to cracking during welding. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) is commonly used with matching filler metals like Inconel 625 or 82 (ERNiCrMo-3 or ERNiCr-3).

It depends on the grade. Inconel 600 and 601 withstand oxidation up to 2000-2200°F (1093-1200°C). Inconel 718 retains high strength up to 1300°F (700°C).

Both are high-performance nickel alloys. Inconel is generally superior for high-temperature oxidation resistance, while Hastelloy (especially C-276) is often preferred for severe chemical corrosion resistance in reducing acids.

Inconel alloys are predominantly nickel-based (>50% Ni), while Incoloy alloys have a lower nickel content (<50% Ni) and higher iron content, making them more cost-effective for certain applications while still offering excellent performance.

Most Inconel grades are non-magnetic at room temperature. This property is beneficial for applications requiring materials that do not interfere with magnetic fields.

The high cost is due to the high content of expensive alloying elements like Nickel and Molybdenum, complex manufacturing processes (vacuum induction melting), and difficulty in machining/forming compared to steel.
