Inconel 625 Pipe

Inconel 625 Pipe is a high end nickel based superalloy piping solution that is known to have great strength and an excellent ability to resist corrosion. This alloy has an extreme environmental capability, and this is attributed to the fact that it is highly tensile and tough in temperatures between 1093degC and 2000degC (cryogenic to 2000 degF). The special alloy formed by nickel, chromium and molybdenum and hardened with niobium helps to avoid age-hardening treatments, and offers a better resistance to oxidation and carburization. It finds extensive use in aerospace, chemical processing as well as marine engineering applications where reliability is highly demanded.

Corrosion Resistance Properties of Inconel 625

Inconel 625 Pipe has an outstanding corrosion resistance because of its high nickel concentrations and chromium-molybdenum alloying, which constitute the matrix. It also exhibits exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing conditions, and it is better than austenitic stainless steels. The alloy is oxidation and acid resistant over a wide range of concentrations and temperatures of nitric, phosphoric, sulfuric, hydrochloric acid. It has a very good stress-corrosion cracking resistance in chloride and caustic solution. At high temperatures, minimal attack is caused by seawater and brine solutions. The material is resistant to organic acid, alkaline solutions and neutral salt conditions. Temperature oxidation resistance up to 1800F and it is more resistant to carburization and nitriding atmosphere than a majority of high temperature alloys.

Manufacturing Process of Inconel 625 Seamless Pipe

Inconel 625 seamless pipe is produced by means of vacuum induction melting (VIM) or vacuum arc remelting (VAR) to achieve exceptional purity and uniform chemical composition. Hot extrusion or rotary piercing is used to convert the cast ingots to hollow shells. Through pilger mills, multiple hot-rolling processes are used to decrease the wall thickness and diameter without decreasing concentricity. Cold pilgering/cold drawing is used to reach higher dimensional tolerances and a better surface finish. In between annealing steps of cold-working phases ensure the lack of work hardening and preserve ductility. Surface scale is removed by final solution annealing then pickling in acid baths. Oxide-free surfaces are obtained by bright annealing in controlled atmosphere furnaces to be used in the critical applications. Strict quality control is maintained throughout all the stages that would guarantee adherence to the ASTM B444 and ASME SB444 standards.

Inconel 625 Pipe vs Other Nickel Alloys

The comparison of Inconel 625 Pipe and other nickel alloys assists in the optimization of the material selection. Alloy 625 has a higher strength and less susceptible to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking than Versus Inconel 600 because of its molybdenum content. Alloy 625 is easier to weld and does not need heat treatment after welding as Inconel 718 that has a higher strength by precipitation hardening. Inconel 625 is similar to Hastelloy C-276 in corrosion resistance and is more readily available as well as commonly less expensive. Alloy 625 is better suited to high temperature and oxidizing environments in comparison with Monel 400. Inconel 625, as compared to Versus Incoloy 825, is stronger in high temperatures, and has better resistance to reducing acids. This selection is conditioned by the peculiarities of the services, and Inconel 625 provides a compromising balance of the strength, corrosion resistance, and fabricability to the majority of the tasks which demand the highest requirements.

Inconel Pipe Roughness & Surface Finish

Surface roughness testers are used to measure roughness of the Inconel pipes, which are reported in Ra (arithmetic average) value. The surface roughness of Inconel 625 pipe ( e = 0.0015mm or 0.00006 inches) is lower than the Inconel 600 pipe, like the PVC, glass and other drawn tubing. This finish enables the minimization of friction loss in fluid flow systems and reduces fouling in chemical process systems. Welded steel of a commercial grade has a roughness of 0.045mm (0.0018), galvanized iron 0.15mm (0.006) and cast iron 0.26mm (0.010) by comparison. The cold-drawn Inconel 625 seamless pipes also have better surface finish that provides enhanced flow properties, pressure drop, and cleanability where sanitary use is required. Bright annealed finish offers the smoothest surface to industries that process pharmaceutical and food.
