Introduction to Monel Products
Monel is a family of nickel copper alloys, which consist largely of nickel (upto 67% and copper), with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon, and silicon. The Monel alloys, initially produced by the International Nickel Company (now Special Metals Corporation), have a greater strength than pure nickel, and are renowned due to their great resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and alkalies corrosion.
In comparison to stainless steel, Monel is a better resister in reducing environments and is in effect resistant to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking. It has a high strength and toughness at a broad temperature range, subzero cryogenic temperatures to 1000°F (538°C).
Stellar Alloys is one of the leading suppliers of Monel products, which means that the industry will not lack these essential materials. You may require the general-purpose corrosion resistance of Monel 400 or the strength of Monel K500 that is precipitation hardened and we offer certified materials that are ready to be fabricated into shafts, valves, pumps and process piping.

Key Applications by Industry

- Marine Engineering : Seawater pumps, propeller shafts, valve stems, and boat hulls utilize Monel for its virtual immunity to pitting and stress corrosion cracking in flowing seawater.
- Chemical Processing : Handling hydrofluoric acid, fluorine, hydrogen chloride, and sulfuric acid. Monel 400 is one of the few alloys that can withstand hydrofluoric acid in all concentrations.
- Oil & Gas : Used in crude oil distillation towers, heat exchangers, valves, and pumps exposed to sour gas and brine. Monel K500 is used for drill collars and instruments.
- Power Generation : Feedwater heaters, de-aerating heaters, and heat exchangers benefit from Monel’s high strength and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures.
- Aerospace : Aircraft fuel tanks, hydraulic tubing, and rivets. Monel is used for its safety in oxygen systems and retention of strength at cryogenic temperatures.
- Medical : Surgical instruments and implants utilize Monel due to its resistance to sterilization chemicals and body fluids, though less common than Titanium or Stainless.
Corrosion Resistance Properties
Monel is renowned for its specific resistance capabilities:
- Seawater: Exceptional resistance to rapidly flowing seawater and marine atmosphere.
- Hydrofluoric Acid: One of the few alloys resistant to HF acid in all concentrations up to the boiling point.
- Reducing Acids: Excellent resistance to sulfuric and hydrochloric acids under reducing conditions.
- Alkalies: Highly resistant to caustic alkalies and salts.
- Stress Corrosion Cracking: Virtually immune to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking, a common failure mode for stainless steels.

Frequently Asked Questions
Monel is a nickel-copper alloy containing approximately 63-67% nickel and 28-34% copper. It also contains small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon, and silicon to enhance its properties.
Monel 400 is the standard alloy with high strength and corrosion resistance. Monel K500 has added aluminum and titanium, which allows it to be precipitation hardened (aged), resulting in 2-3 times the tensile strength of Monel 400 while maintaining similar corrosion resistance.
Yes, Monel can be welded using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG), gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG), and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). It requires clean surfaces and appropriate filler metals (e.g., ERNiCu-7).
Generally, yes. Monel 400 is widely considered one of the best materials for marine environments, resisting biofouling and pitting. Inconel 625 is also excellent but is often more expensive and used for more extreme temperature/corrosion combinations.
It offers a unique combination of high strength and resistance to corrosion by rapidly flowing seawater. It is also resistant to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking, which plagues many stainless steels in marine settings.
Yes, Monel 400 is slightly magnetic at room temperature (Curie temperature is around 20-50°C). Monel K500 is virtually non-magnetic, even at very low temperatures.
The cost is driven by the high price of Nickel and Copper, specialized melting and processing requirements, and lower production volumes compared to stainless steel.
Yes, but it work-hardens rapidly. It requires sharp tools, slower speeds, and heavy feeds. Monel R-405 is a free-machining grade designed specifically for automatic screw machines.
Common uses include marine propeller shafts, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, chemical processing equipment (especially for HF acid), gasoline tanks, and electrical/electronic components.
Monel has significantly better corrosion resistance in reducing environments (acids) and seawater. It is stronger than 316 but also more expensive. Stainless 316 is generally better in oxidizing environments (like nitric acid).
