254 SMO Sheet & Plate

254 SMO Sheet & Plates Manufacturer & Supplier

Stellar Alloys Steel Pipes and Tubes is a reliable producer of 254 SMO sheets, plates and coils, produced with respect to ASTM A240 and offered in UNS S31254 grade. 254 SMO sheets & plates is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel created to exhibit superior performance in aggressive and chloride-rich environments that low-grade stainless steels might fail to perform in.

Having a high molybdenum and nitrogen content, 254 SMO provides a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of over 42, which provides high resistance against pitting and crevice corrosion. This is why it is a perfect attempt to be used in marine and offshore applications and in chemical processing, which are subject to seawater and other difficult factory media. The 254 SMO has much greater resistance to chloride-induced attack and sulphuric acid environments than the standard grades like ASTM A240 TP316 and ASTM A240 904L.

UNS S31254 material has a low carbon structure that guarantees high levels of weldability, and it reduces the chances of intergranular corrosion. Meanwhile, it has greater mechanical strength than the majority of standard austenitic stainless steels, enabling a decreased thickness of the material to be used without affecting performance. Its remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking also increases its suitability for use in challenging processing systems.

Stellar Alloys Steel Pipes and Tubes offers 254 SMO products in any size, thickness and finish to suit the needs of the project. All sheets, plates and coils are fully tested to be dimensionally accurate, have corrosion resistance and are also in line with international quality standards.

In industries that need superior durability, strength and extended corrosion resistance, 254 SMO stainless steel from Stellar Alloys provides a reliable and economical service.

Applications of SMO 254 Sheets, Plates

SMO 254 (UNS S31254) sheets and plates are widely used in industries that require exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking.

  • Marine & Offshore Structures – Ideal for seawater handling systems, desalination plants, and offshore platforms.
  • Chemical Processing Industry – Used in reactors, pressure vessels, storage tanks, and heat exchangers handling acidic and chloride-rich media.
  • Oil & Gas Industry – Suitable for piping systems, scrubbers, and processing equipment exposed to harsh chemicals.

  • Desalination Plants – Applied in evaporators and brine heaters due to excellent resistance to seawater corrosion.

  • Pulp & Paper Industry – Used in bleaching equipment and chemical recovery units.

  • Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) Systems – Effective in environments containing high sulphur and acidic condensates.
  • Power Generation Plants – Utilized in condensers and cooling water systems.

  • Pharmaceutical & Food Processing Equipment – Preferred where high corrosion resistance and hygiene standards are essential.

FAQs About 254 SMO Sheets & Plates

SMO 254 is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel known for its excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride attack. It is designated as UNS S31254 and commonly supplied under ASTM A240 specifications.

SMO 254 offers high mechanical strength, superior resistance to seawater corrosion, strong performance in acidic environments, and excellent weldability due to its low carbon content.

It is widely used in marine applications, offshore platforms, desalination plants, chemical processing equipment, heat exchangers, and oil & gas systems exposed to aggressive chloride environments.

Yes, SMO 254 provides significantly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to 316 and 904L grades, especially in high-chloride and seawater conditions.

Yes, SMO 254 has good weldability and can be welded using standard austenitic stainless steel welding procedures with proper filler materials.
